Students are taught different strategies to solve addition problems quickly.   First graders are expected to be fluent in math facts to 20 at the close of the year.   We teach the facts to 10 first then 20.  Tools we use are 10 frames, number lines and counters. They are used when teaching strategies.   Strategies we teach:

      make a picture

      count on 0, 1, 2    4+2

flip flop  (flip the addends so the larger number is first)   3+4 is 4+3   commutative property

       doubles    5+5    6+6

       doubles  plus 1    6+7 is 6+6 and 1 more

       10 friends  7+3   6+4    (rainbow facts)

helps with facts to 20        8+4 is 8+2=10 and 2 more
